Re-covering dining table chairs-what fabric?

Hello all,
I have recently bought a bargain of a dining table from a charity shop to up-cycle shabby chic style!
I have 6 chairs to re cover the seat pads and back strip. What material is best & hard wearing?
They won't be used everyday all day but I want something a bit lasting?
Anyone recommend? I've been looking on eBay but don't want to be hasty & waste money!
Thanks all! Xxx

Last time I did this for a friend...
we cut the back panel out of a sofa someone had dumped on her roadside.
Covered 6 chairs but seats only...

I discovered pintrest today and it was the coolest table cover ever - they had done the table top brown like a roof and the four sides were a house with windows and a door with a zip - how that would've suited me as a child - sorry if it was useless but it was the coolest table ever ;-)0

I would use a good thick curtain fabric (if i was ever to attempt to recover chairs!)
Maybe keep looking round the cs's for curtains you like, then just cut them up?
If the curtain pair were large enough, you could use one curtain for the chairs, and use the other to make a table runner?
xCan't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
About 10 years ago I got a cheap £1 metre remnant of fairly thin but lovely fabric - my friend, who does all sorts with fabric, said it wouldn't be any good to cover chairs.... It lasted 6 years of use and the chairs are still fine but in the loft for DS when he gets a place of his own! I suspect they will last another few years of use.
So my advice would be to get whatever fabric you like
Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!

I'd go for recycled curtain fabric too, strong enough for lots of sitting on and pretty.

I had some curtains made at Dunhelm Mill for my dining room. Cost the same as ready made, and we got matching material for the chairs. Just undid the original fabric. Turned out to be five layers! Got it back to the horsehair and springs, used one of the originals as a template and cut and stapled new ones on. Then bought a can of Scotschgaurd spray from ebay and protected them with that. They look fab and have lasted well too. We also covered three canvases with the material instead of pictures to go on the wall!I Believe in saving money!!!:T
