SLR photography is ALL about the glass!!!

As you will soon discover if you take the plunge into SLR shooting.

The differance my cheap under £100 50mm f1.8 made to my aging Canon 1000d was amazing. Now to save up for better and better lenses for me.

So I would say go for an entry level model camera 1st just to get used to shooting in SLR, grab a new decent lens for it and go from there.

Very good lenses cost lots of money, but if you stick to one format you can always upgrade your body at a later date.

Yeah 1.8 primes are something that you're never going to be able to recreate on a bridge camera. They open up a whole new world in terms of depth-of-field. And are great for portraits :)
