Ferries to Ireland - warning

Please everyone going by Ferry to or from Ireland North or South make sure you have proper id (passports, driving licence etc) if you do not you will not be allowed on!
This is a fairly recent development, obviously due to security fears and no doubt for the best but those of us who have sailed for years these routes may not be aware its now so strict.
Last month I saw a very disappointed couple being turned away and I don't think they would get a refund either.Different ferry companies require different ID's.

Just found this on Irish ferries :~

    Passports

    Ireland/Britain Routes

Irish Ferries recommend you bring your passport when travelling abroad. Irish and British citizens do not strictly require a passport to travel between the two countries - some form of identification is however required.

Photo ID, Bank Cards or bills for house utilities addressed to you are all acceptable and useful means of identification. Please note that all other nationalities require passports.

    This was taken from Norfolkline

16.2 Irish Sea only. All Passengers aged 18 or over must produce photographic identification in the form of a valid passport or valid photographic EU national identity card or valid photographic driving license or valid police warrant card/badge or Citizen Card or a valid Government-issued identity card at Norfolkline check-in.

I went last week via Holyhead & was never asked for any ID either way - so I'm guessing it depends on who processes you & whether or not they can be bothered

We always take passports just in case, not worth the hassle if you dont!
