I have a male rottie and my sister has his sister from same litter. They use to be like that when we took them for walks over the fields and stuff. You would have thought they were trying to murder each other , the noises they made. Even now(they are 4 at the end of oct) when they go out together or are in the garden they still playfight and yes it still sounds like they are murdering each other. When either have had enough they give a distinctive growl/bark and they seperate .

As above - sounds like play fighning nothing more.

Zara, when she "plays" with other GS... fur flies. She does not to play with other dogs but with other GS - wohoooooo. Both her and other GS we know play in a very specific way. Anyone watching from the side could have assumed we are having a proper dog fight...

End up dirty like God knows what, covered in each other slobber but with no bits missing, no skin broken and generally very happy with themselves

My dogs playfight like that all the time and spend a lot of time at each others throats (literally) but they aren't hurting each other at all. They are both GSDs, they also play the same with their cousin a 24 week old labrador and he gives as good as he gets.

Dogs playing can look terrifying but thats just to us, to them it's normal. Try a youtube search for dogs playing roughly, you'll think most are trying to kill each other but they are happy enough to keep going back for more.
  • Many thanks for all your replies its made me feel much better. My dogs hackles do go up but they dont growl or snarl just bark and yelp at each other. They definely have never drawn blood but do get filthy and covered in slobber.

Krlyr thanks for the video and I think your idea to involve a registered trainer is a really good plan.

    What a pair of cuties!

My beagle x boy used to play with a GSD girl and the first time I nearly had heart failure because they were so rough! She had him pinned down round the neck, then he held on to the fur under her neck- they loved it!!
My own 2 play fight a lot, especially when I am on the phone and cannot intercept- I call them 'the dragons'. When things get even slightly of hand the barks change, but mostly it is just noise and nothing more

People have mentioned spaying, is there any evidence that this makes for a calmer dog ?
Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.
