We've just bought a new engine for our car, paid supplier & garage who fitted it on Barclaycard Visa. If we pay the balance off, would we still get protection? This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere.
Cheers

Yes you do, assuming it was a credit card.

Thanks, sorry for lack of clarity - I'm a bit of an old fogey - to me a Visa is a Barclaycard, even though my BOS debit card says visa on it (why?).

Not complaining at all, but it seems a bit odd that they're still liable once you've paid the money back. Do you know the logic behind this?

Barclaycard was the first card to be part of the Visa network in the UK I believe, Visa is a card network much like MasterCard or American Express (Although Amex tends to issue their own cards, whereas banks pay to be able to issue Visa and MasterCard cards. This allows the cards to be used worldwide.)

The consumer credit act says that the company remains joint liable. Nothing about once you've paid it off. Visa, MasterCard and Amex all also have chargeback policies if you buy dodgie items etc.
