New House and Switching Supplier
Hi All
I completed on my new home on 13th July and moved in on 10th August.
I initially contacted EDF as they were the old supplier for Gas and Electricity and was put on their Standard Variable Tariff.
Having finally got round to looking at the various supplier options I decided to take advantage of the MSE Cashback offer and switch to Scottish Power.
Then got to thinking about EDF and potential cancellation fees. Have looked through their T&C's and it states I can cancel with 12 days of verbally agreeing it - but no mention of fees or length of contract.
Looking through the FAQ's section on this board, I came across the following from 15-11-2011 (Second to last post on "Changing Supplier")...
Is this still relevant ?
Does that mean that the switch will go through ok ?
or - will EDF charge me a "Cancellation fee" ?
PS: tried calling EDF on Friday but was on hold for 20 minutes before hanging up (0800 number) and tried again today - but they're closed due to bank holiday...

You will be on a 'deemed contract' initially with that supplier - which will normally be their most expensive Standard tariff(but with no lock-in clause).
Then make you mind up which company you want to move to(if at all) the move takes up to 6/7 weeks. If you decide to stay with the present company, on a cheaper tariff, they will normally backdate to the day you moved in(if you don't leave it too long).

There is never an early termination fee on any supplier's Standard tariff. It's about the only reason ever to be on Standard, since it's always the most expensive. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Its part of the Standard Licence Conditions (SLC) that a Deemed contract can't include an early termination fee.
Switches takes 21 days from the end of your cooling off period now per a SLC14A which was introduced in Nov 2011.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Excellent - Many thanks :T“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0
