Freezer problems

Hi guys

I wonder if any of you have come across this problem.

I have a chest freezer, the type you load from the top. I have had it a good few years now and its not an automatic defrost one.

I last defrosted it about a month ago but realised yesterday that there was a lot of ice at the top and it needed doing again, much sooner than I would have expected really.

So I emptied the freezer but as I got 2/3rds of the way down I realised that everything at the bottom was defrosted. I mean completely defrosted not just a bit so obviously it had been like that for at least a few days if not longer.

I have had to throw loads of stuff away, but the puzzle is, why is everything in the top 2/3rds still frozen sold, but the bottom 1/3rd is completely thawed.

I have put a load of bubblewrap at the bottom of the freezer and put some stuff back in, but to be honest I don't know if this will work even as a temporary measure. I have also put the fast freeze switch on.

Anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong.

Most probably, the compressor failing by the sounds of it which is pretty much the death knell I'm afraid.

Could be too close to the wall?
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
