I have to go to Walton-On-The-Naze, Essex, from West London / Richmond-Upon-Thames, on 7th Sept (arriving in early afternoon hopefully), and leave on the 10th Sept (depart after 10am).
I have looked at the train sites - its all quoting about £26 one way! I am job seeking at the moment, and can't afford £52....but have to get there. I have a freedom Pass that allows free travel from Zones 1-6 in London.
Anyone got any ideas on cheap ways to get there?

Hi
As you can use you freedom pass on the underground {therefore free travel for that part} the best I can find is this one {link below}London Liverpool Street to Walton with the dates you need would cost below £22.00 buying 2 singles

As you have a Freedom Pass, why are you not using that to travel across London?
For example, an Off Peak Return from Stratford to Walton-on-The-Naze is £34.00.
A ticket from a station further out, but still in the zones, will probably be even cheaper.
An alternative, still using your Freedom Pass to Stratford, is to get Advance Singles from there to Colchester, and use Anytime Singles from Colchester to Walton on the Naze at £6.40 each way.
If you can be flexible with your times, those Advance Singles could cost as little as £8.00 each way, making a return trip possible at £28.80.
Information from Southern Railway.
Actually, if you can get to Liverpool Street easier, Advance Singles from there to Colchester are the same price as from Stratford.
Might be best to avoid Stratford station and the inevitable crowds there.0 -
Thank you all for your replies.
I have now booked my ticket using MyTrainTicket.co.uk. I got a decent price too.
When I was booking however, I saw the ticket on sale for first class for just £4 more than standard. My mother told me I should treat myself, because I've never 1st classed anything other than a postage stamp! Lol.
I tried booking the £12 ticket 6 times, every time I entered the payment details, hit continue, and it chucked me out - then next time I reloaded the page, I found that the 1st class ticket had gone up to £17, and all other tickets were still the same price as they had been. Not that it matters, but I declined 1st class then, as I felt the additional couple £'s was not something I can justify.
Thank you all so much for your replies and your help. I am now able to go on my trip!!! :T0 -
Thanks for your feedback JustJinny.
These are a couple of reasons why I would not use www.mytrainticket.co.uk.
From their FAQs...Do you charge a booking fee?
We charge a £1.00 booking fee for all transactions unless otherwise stated. However, if you book multiple journeys in one transaction you will only be charged the fee once.
Do you charge a credit card fee?
We apply a credit/charge card fee of 2.95% (that is 2.95p for every £1 spent). There is no card fee when paying with debit cards, including Visa Electron and Maestro.
Oh, and they will charge £1.70 for sending by first class post if you want that service.
That's why I suggested Southern Railway who makes no such charges.0 -
IMO there's no great advantage in going first class unless the trip is at least two hours. Then the trick is to see if you can eat and drink the difference in price :rotfl: I've just paid an extra £15 to travel from London and Edinburgh and I certainly made sure I got my money's worth  :T0
