Halifax Cardcash abroad

Hi,

I have recently moved to Germany for the year whilst studying. Through my own laziness, I never upgraded my CardCash account to a full bank account and am thus unable to withdraw money from ATMs over here. The Halifax website is rather unhelpful and having trawled through their FAQs am nonethewiser how to get at my money. I will be setting up a German bank account shortly, unable to currently as they're rather more strict with sunday trading hours over here, but have been told that even then it can take a couple of weeks before I'll be able to move money around.

Is there any advice anyone can give me, as to how I can access my funds?

Thanks in advance

    Try ringing them.

    Link to T&Cs
We’ll send you a Visa debit card that you can use to:
    • Pay for just about anything. Just look out for the Visa sign
    • Take out up to £300 cash per account holder (or equivalent currency) from cash machines around the world. To ensure you can use your card while you’re abroad, register it with us before you travel by calling us on 08457 20 30 40

    Note the cost.
If you use your debit card to withdraw cash or pay for goods and services in a currency other than sterling, the exchange rate we use will be the Visa Reference Exchange Rate. We will charge a foreign exchange fee of 2.75% of the amount of the transaction and a £1.50 fee for each payment or withdrawal.

How can bank opening hours be even more strict than shut for the entire day, as they almost all are in England! If you try and get in on a Sunday you get barred from the building for a week?

That's odd. I have Halifax Cardcash and don't have issues at foreign ATMs.

Is it Electron or Visa Debit?

You should be able to use your Cardcash card abroad if it is a Visa Debit/Electron card.

Have the bank got your address registered in Germany or is it still linked to an address in the UK?

Are the bank aware that you are currently in Germany and plan on using your card over there?

It may be a simple matter of notifying the bank that you are currently abroad. If you have never advised them that you are using your card in Germany then it could be your transactions are being declined due to suspected fraud.
