Credit card bureaucracy hassle

I made arrangements to transfer a credit card balance to a 0% credit card offer online. Trouble is the transaction was duplicated, tried to contact the 0% credit card co, they said to contact the credit card I was transferring from to ask them to return the money to the account. The credit card co said they couldn't do this. To cut a long story short this ping ponging went on for a while by email and phone. Now I have received goodwill payment on my 0% credit card which has cleared the outstanding balance in full leaving me handsomely in credit. Can they retract the goodwill payment?

Sounds like it might not have been a goodwill payment as such, just a one-off payment to make up for not being able to refund the duplicate credit. If this is so then I would expect they could take back the payment.

It was labelled in the statement as a goodwill payment, I would say that legally it would be their mistake and therefore difficult to reverse especially if I took it to the next stage with the Fsa.
