A cry of anguish

  • I've had a nice day out, today, at a large Agricultural show. I then return to see tripe like this post.

The very first two sentences set the scene very well. The anonymous poster is (a) Extremely Ageist, and (b) Violently against the current UK voting system, which makes him/her liberal.

Far be it from a well off old boomer to criticise the so-called 'young', but someone who is an ageist liberal breaker of tenancy contracts does not deserve to be listened to seriously. There is absolutely no substance whatsoever to the argument.

    Let me re-phrase the post:
Being under 35, I simply hate 'boomers' because they have made money in their lives. I haven't. My landlord is charging me less than market rate, but I hate him because he is a 'boomer' and he has just stopped charging me significantly less than market rate. He has also allowed me to break the tenancy rules and buy a dog, but he is not happy about it. Life is hard and I want to demonstrate in the streets about it.

    Well tough!

This 'boomer' landlord may well have been just like me. In 1972, married, just starting new first job. Total joint assets £38.51. Renting. Or even like my brother, who by 1972 was aged 25, divorced, with two children, renting, little education (left school at 16).

Both of us did 'normal' things (then) like working, earning, saving, buying a [slum] house when we could to avoid insidious rent, upsizing at appropriate intervals, and spending less than we earned. Both of us could retire well before 65 and continue to live the same chosen lifestyle for ever more. And rather perversely, my brother (with children + divorce but no education) retired on more money [relative to our respective lifetime earnings] than I (No children/divorce, and a graduate].

People like this seem unable to respond to reasoned argument. The very large chip on their shoulders prevents tham saying "..I wonder how our older landlord made all his money? Perhaps we should find out and do something similar...", and instead, makes them say "I am young. I expect to live up to my 100% income. Older people had it 'easy' and we deserve to have it easier. If we don't, then we should demonstrate..."

    Serve the eviction notice immediately.

Having failed to get the class war burning as nicely as they'd hoped, the extreme Left has turned its attention to the generations.

Gramsci is nodding approvingly. Somewhere in hell.

Sounds like a c0ck and bull story to me. I really don't have the stomach for it.

    What an epic whinge.
Why doesn't he just stop wasting money on things like dogs and save up and buy a house?

True. I owned a hamster in my early 20s and will have to forego having a driveway until about 2030. The f3cklessness of youth poisoning one's future I suppose.

This is a rather prosaic example of a frustrated individual but the general sentiment is in no way confined to the "extreme Left".

You may not like it, but a lot of younger people feel like him. Disenfranchised, ripped off and angry.

if we're debating all the big injustices in the world why don't we discuss the starving children

some of the whingers here could show some solidarity with the starving masses of the world by selling their computers and giving the money to oxfam. after all what is more important, a starving kid getting some food or coming on here spouting drivel about the big bad landlords not giving their tenants free houses.

Or maybe all the landlords could forego a month's rent every year for the same purpose.

Those with the broadest shoulders and all that.

The first "bargain" you linked to, which is almost 2 miles from Wellingborough train station, would cost a commuter £5360 in post tax income to actually travel into London Bridge each year.

If they were unlucky enough to need to use the tube this would rise to £6100 a year.

How do you expect someone on an average wage to afford this, pay a mortgage, pay childcare, and go to work? Oh look they can't, they have to remain amongst the working poor in London. Unable to really afford to rent, unable to buy, unable to have kids with or without sanctimonious internet commentards carping about living within their means and tightening their belts.

Is the term professional being overused these days?
Many people who would have been classed as technicians in the past, now seem to refer to themselves as professionals.

Nowdays it seems that the term 'professionals' indicates a couple without children that have jobs. Not necessarily a couple with a profession

I've given up on arguing over the generation thing on here. There is no point, it's populated by a large amount of older, wealthy people without children.

Look at most newspaper articles that allows comments and whether it's the telegraph, the guardian or the BBC, all follow the same route when it comes to the generation gap...and it cerainly appears to be at odds with the hatred for the younger generations on here.

And, annoyingly, some people just over 40, with kids, who still disagree with plenty of what you say.
C'mon Dev, you're starting to stereotype as often as hsw.
