Don't ever walk down the sharkhill spouting that rubbish chewmylegoff, thats one "UK county" where you can still get a slap around the ear for not standing to the UK National anthem

what so don't walk around a protestant unionist area in northern ireland suggesting that northern ireland is better off as part of the UK than it would be on its own, or i'll get a slap from protestant unionists?

    perplexing stuff.

    I dunno.......

Maybe I was suprised that iphones were around when your generation were saving and paying down your mortgages.

And maybe you'd like to consider the relative cost of an Apple computer in the early 80's to that of an iphone today. Yes, an iphone can be considered as being an upper end mobile phone, but relative to income, I'm sure it's cheaper to buy/own than an early Apple computer was back in the day.

Let's face it, not having an iPhone (~£400 a year ?) isn't exactly going to make the first step onto the "ladder" a lot easier, is it ?

I disagree - it is deciding not to spend £400 on an iphone and all those other expenditures that are nice but not essential (home made sandwiches rather than bought, resturant and takeaway once a month not once a week) that meant i coudl afford a deposit in 2001 and a move up 2 years ago.
Having read back, yes, that's the case. So apologies.
In Eire they have had to ct most salaries and benefits by more than 10% - this will translate to a much more than 10% reduction in discretionary spending (you stop having new carpets and takeaways long before you stop buying food and gas/electric) and ths there is a good chance that 20%+ of such shops are likely to have to close down.
    I think....

    The ignorance is mind boggling

are you going to explain yourself, and the reasons why what i said about NI's economic situation are incorrect, or are you just going to keep posting your normal stuff which is essentially equivalent to typing "U R STUPID" over and over again.

Intersting that the whingers tend to compare with very selective groups. I think if you were to look at it from a single womans point of view, the last 50 years were not too brilliant for home ownership.

If they are that low paid then I doubt they would have been able to buy in the past either, apart from in quite unusual circumstances.

The maths have been rehearsed here time and time again but no amount of reason seems able to shake this fixation that there was once some golden age when shop assistants and clerks regularly bought their own homes.

Here are some figure to ponder.

According to Halifax the earning to house price ratio was 3x in the mid 90s the lowest it has been since the 1950s. It is now 4.32 the average house price is £161,094 so the salary they use must be £37k male full time mean. If house price was to fall to 3x they would be £112k so if property was at the lowest since 1950 someone on £25k would be able to buy with a 4x mortgage and a 10% deposit .

Why doesn't he just stop wasting money on things like dogs and save up and buy a house?

Gosh that's harsh, see past the dog/cat situation and try to understand what OP is ACTUALLY talking about. Its not really difficult if you have even a modicum of intelligence. My word, some people are so obtuse; this is supposed to be a helpful forum, not one where you can post a negative response just because;clearly, you are so judgmental (and your life probably perfect). Sorry to all but I get so aggravated ......

Do you know what mate, it's people like you where I imagine them in old age childless, friendless and alone with no joy in their soul, looking like some kind of Eberneezer Scrooge character counting their illgotton gains every night as they jump at every loud noise.

There is a little gang of you on here where they do nothing but advocate pain and misery and sacrifice in order to please the property owning Gods.

Of course you have to work hard in life to get what you want, but come on, you need some kind of work/life balance. When I am old and wrinkled and pestering my daughter, more than anything I want to see her in a lived in home with a family(and that might include a family pet) and a man who loves and cherishes her, rather than some kind of 5 bedroomed souless monument to the Queen God Allsopp.

Sorry, should have read this first. Love it!!!!! Some real bored/retired/judgmental/odd people on this side of the forum. It makes me mad and a bit sad too

Strange juxtaposition of 'retired' and 'judgemental' there.

Pot, kettle, black (and no, I'm far from retired).
