NCB dropped by 5 years for one claim?

I had a wee prang in my car in January this year (big scrape down the left hand side when parking). I claimed on our insurance as the cost was approx £900. We recently received our renewal and our NCB has dropped from 9 years to 4 years. When I queried it, they blamed it on the underwriters' policy. I expected it to be reduced by maybe 2 years but not five! Does this sound right? I'm not going with them this year but this is my only proof of NCB.

'Protecting' the NCB is the only way to stop this.
Doesn't stop them increasing the premiums if you have a cliam but maintains your NCB.
As for your claim, if you have damage that doesn't include a third party it is always worth trying to get it fixed cheaply out of your own pocket, when you factor in excess and likely future premiums...plus its a 'life' lost if you have protected policy...something i have had for more years than i can remember.
I reckon on under a grand to be not worth involving insurance at all if possible.0 -
Does make you wonder what insurance is for sometimes......
Daft bat hit my car a year or so ago, they dragged it out for 18 months and the addition premium I suffered until it was resolved actually meant it would have been cheaper to get out of my car and write the stupid cow a cheque for the £600 her repairer charged for a new wing mirror.
And my premiums STILL haven't returned to a normal level despite it going 100% in my favour! So total cost to me, probably in the region of £1000 just because this silly cow thought an entire queue of cars was actually double parked on double yellow lines....“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Most underwriters will only take 5 to 7 years NCD as a maximum into account. Anything above this is essentially wasted. It sounds like they've docked 2 years for the claim from a maximum of 7 you may have had as well as not crediting a year for this current year, hence why you seem to be getting 4 years on your renewal.thehappybutterfly wrote: »I had a wee prang in my car in January this year (big scrape down the left hand side when parking). Personally I'd write to your insurer's asking them to explain exactly how the NCD has been calculated.0
