Phone line - New Build

I've just rented a new build flat. The letting company are closed now until Tuesday, but I'm hoping someone on here may offer some advise.
I'm only renting for about 8 months. There seems to square wall piece for a phone socket in the flat (without the whole) and I believe there is wiring.
Looking at the BT website, it's £130 to be connected with an 18 month contract if I'm a new customer.
It's possible I could end up going traveling for a year (I'm a final year student) after the 8 months, so I would not be renting another flat to transfer it to.
Is there an alternative or another method? I basically need broadband and to do this I need a phone line, however it's going to be extremely expensive if I have to pay £130 and 18 month contract just for 8 months.
Any ideas?

I think I may have answered my own question.
O2 seem to offer a phone line (free weekend/evening calls) and unlimited broadband for £25 a month with a month to month contract if you pay a £30 deposit/fee.
Connecting a new phone line is £40 with the package above.
Much better than BT.
Has anyone got any experience with O2 home line/broadband and connection? Are they okay?0 -
The Post Office does a phone line without a contract, but the broadband is a 12 month contract.

Plusnet has no annual contract

Almost all line install deals require a 12m line rental contract-though BT are by far the most expensive. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Pay monthly mobile broadband? Not the most ideal solution but it's an inexpensive solution nonetheless. We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

That's not an option unfortunately, however it would have been much easier.
Have phoned Post Office. £60 installation and then £13 a month, no contract. Broadband with O2 with no contract is about £8.
Only other problem I have now is that while my address is now in the Royal Mail database, apparently it takes a while to filter through to the companies. Post Office/BT/O2 do not currently have my address in their database, so cannot get anything done at the moment.0 -

I used to use this at my old place. Get the dongle in the right place and it's fine.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?0 -
Someone's telling porkies - 'No Contract' ? Utter hogwash! There IS a contract, and you agree to its T&C before service is provided.
There may not be a minimum term, but that is a seperate issue, and it would be foolish to assume that no minimum term = no contract. The two are entirely seperate.0
