Diesel vs Petrol

Having a bit of a panic attack after realising in the last 3 weeks I've filled up my car 4 times costing near enough £200 i'm starting to wonder if it would be better trying to trade in my petrol c-max for a diesel version.
My current car is only getting about 38mpg which isn't actually too far off the manufacturers recommended 40mpg (combined). After reading that I could get around 60mpg from the diesel version i'm trying to work out if it would be worth the estimated £2k extra we would need to find for a diesel car of similar spec and age after part-exing our current car.
If we were to change cars we'd be intending to keep it long term - all our other cars have been 'till death do us part' so fingers crossed we'd be looking to keep hold of it for another 7+ years. I've tried doing a spreadsheet listing the additional purchase price of a diesel, the lower road tax it would offer but i'm stuck on working out how much we could potentially save in fuel so I can work out if long term it would be worth stumping up the extra cash now.
Anyone got any tips on the easiest way of working it all out?
TIA

The more miles you do "out of town" the more likely it is that diesel is best.
Less than 15,000 a year and it probably isn't.
If you're spending £600 a month on fuel diesel or LPG will probably save you money.0 -
daily mail had a couple of articles on the diesel vs petrol issue recently and I'm pretty sure they came out thinking its just not worth it for most people.0
