Finding out about old life policies

A friend of mine found some information in his late fathers old paperwork about some life insurance policies. He just has the policy numbers & no paperwork, so we don't know who they were taken out with. They may have been cashed in years ago, but does anyone know of a way to check who they may have been taken out with?

I used to work for a life assurance company, which in common with others has literally thousands of outstanding unclaimed for policies. Ring one major insurer and ask them to check, and ask if there is a common register for all life companies.
