If I go and buy a new one today and pay it monthly, would the licence in his name just end?
Sorry to ask such simple questions but I just cant wrap my brains around it
Why would you get a new license when your property is currently licensed? Just wait until you get a letter, there is nothing illegal or dodgy about that. Don't waste money having two licenses running concurrently. The license that he has paid for ends when he transfers it or claims the money back.
If you pay by direct debit the first year is all paid in arrears: so a license running September 2012 to August 2013 you would pay six installments all in arrears every month September 2012 to February 2013.
The next license would run September 2013 to August 2014. That would be paid in six advance installments March 2013 to August 2013 and six arrears installments September 2013 to February 2014. This would be half as much as the first year each month, because there are twelve installments not six.
AFAIK any other installments system is partially advance and partially arrears.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
I think thats why I'm so confused by it. We got a letter saying that our new bill was starting which would cover the licence up til December 2013. When I checked online, it said we had £7 outstanding on this new bill so I paid it. I can't describe it very well lol.:hello::wave::hello::wave:0

Don't try to understand it, you really don't need to. If the license is cancelled or transferred they will write to you and you can start from scratch. If the old license in his name goes unpaid next month remind your ex to cancel or transfer his license. Don't pay at account with your ex's name on because he can take the license you paid for to his new address or apply for a refund. Nobody will come bashing your door down and taking you to court unless letters are ignored.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -
Aaaah thank you!
That's helped a lot!

It is the address/ household: students in halls or people in bedsits all have their own numbered/ lettered rooms and that is what they are getting licenses for.
Those sharing a house with individual tenancy agreements will all need their own licences - they don't have to be in numbered rooms; it could simply be a shared house.
We digress anyway - that's not what the OP asked"Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

What you are describing is multiple households in the same building, AKA a House of Multiple Occupancy. Generally the bedrooms will all have lockable doors and the tenants have their own contracts so are not classed as sharers. A regular shared house/ flat is one property with several tenants all on one tenancy agreements. Usually their bedrooms don't lock, they pay for one TV license and one council tax because they are one household.Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

I found this explanation:Initially, you will be asked to make payments on a weekly basis, so you'll pay for your first TV Licence over six months in 26 weekly payments. After this, you can pay towards your next licence in fortnightly payments.
So you must be paying for next year's licence with the fortnightly payments you are making now. You can change the name (or any other details)on the licence online here:

As you are paying for it, it might as well be in your name.0
