new carpet over old

hiya,

I find that the previous people didn't evenput an underlay under their carpet..I want to rent the place out but could really, really do with not having to:

1) remove old carpet
2) buy and fit underlay under new capet.

Could I use the old carpet as an underlay?

many thanks,

yogi

    Plenty of opinions here!
Generally not to be recommended I'd say, think of the levels, smell, movement etc.

i come across this on a daily basis , people just haven't got the money for underlay so they give the old one a good hoover and ask if it's alright to lay the new one on top. 'Not a problem' i say, who am i to judge.

I've got that in my bedroom (done by a previous owner of the house).

It's a bit horrid - the main problem is that the top carpet keeps creeping, in the same way that a rug does when laid on a carpet. The end result is a gap at one end of the bedroom, with the excess wrinkled up at the other end.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

    hiya,

I wish the people before me had thought of puttting down an underlay, but it looks like I should take the long-term view and do it right.
    ta for all the replies.
