Just for people information, recorders (or TVs for that matter) with freeview digital tuners are not future-proof by any means. One of the reasons the analogue signal is being switched off if that broadcast in HD will be starting for which we will all need a HD receiver and this will make the current freeview receivers completely obsolete.
That is, I am afraid how technology (and also big corporate greed) work and if you are looking for future-proofing then you'll buy nothing whatsoever.
The word Futureproof in my post had italics round it, which meant as futureproof as it gets at mo.
So long as the Freeview receiver has a card slot you will be able to receive all the channels that come along except for the handfull of HD ones that will be allowed. HDTV will not make Freeview recievers obsolete, Freeview receivers with HD built in will arrive. Cos HD takes up much more frequency, so will be expensive to run and would reduce the total number of channels for sale ( By GB). Some people will not be bothered about the card slot as it will cost. Mr Murdoch is testing the water this summer, by replacing Sky's 3 Freeview channels with Pay-per-view, Sky Sports possibly Sky1 and Movies. The only thing that will change ( the frequency bands are the same) is the way of paying.
Freeview is the current name of the developing digital sytem. It used to be called ON-Digital, (who went bust because the pay side of it didn't), revived by ITV (-Digital) ( who also went bust for the same reason). Each time it failed it put back GB's sell-off plans, so he approached the BBC as a last gasp, and lo and behold they have made it a success. How is Mr Brown rewarding them, well they have now got to pay for the whole conversion of all the transmitters/masts out of the licence fee to feed GB's pockets by enabling many more NEW digital channels, possibly 200.ac's lovechild0 -

A lot of people are talking about Analogue being switched off but can someone clarify how this will affect me as I watch terrestrial TV through SKY and not an aerial as reception is poor via the aerial.
If I am only using the TARGA HDD/DVD recorder to record from my sky box connected via SCART and then playback or save to DVD at a later time, how will this affect me when Analogue is switched off?
Just want to ensure that this will fulfill my requirements.
Is it true that If I buy the HUMAX pvr then I would need to buy a seperate DVD recorder?0 -

Don't worry,
The analogue switch off will not affect you in any way
Analogue is just a programme delivery system, just as Sky ,or Virgin. and is totally outdated.
They will be switching off slowly, all the old transmitters used to carry BBC1,2 ITV, Ch4,5 to viewers. These are to be replaced by an extension of the digital transmission system, currently called Freeview, so there will be more channels available, at a much higher power than now, and Gordon Brown will make a penny or two by selling them off to the highest bidder.;)
The answer to the Humax question is yes, PVRs are just the same as the Sky+ box. They were meant to have DVD recorders built in years ago but because of software problems with receivers distracting the manufacurers this became a low priority and AFAIK Panasonic are the only ones who have succeeded.

We will most certainly be paying through the nose to receive HD broadcast as well as paying for the new receivers. Afterall we'll be soon paying for the air that we breath:eek:Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0
