Apple awarded $1 0Billion dollars. Good time to buy apple shares?

Hi all

I just found out that apple have been awarded $1 Billion in damages from Samsung in damages for the patent issue that's been going on. Does this mean apple share prices will go up? Is it good time to buy apple shares?

IMHO it will just !!!! people off and result in more sales of Android based products.
Might be worth buying share in the law firm Apple uses.
That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Not sure about buying into the moldy fruit, Samsung could appeal, also Google have acquired Motorola's patents and are apparently taking a serious look at Apples use of their patents.

Don't understand why Samsung don't just turn round & stop providing Apple with parts. Would soon stop them in their tracks. ;)

  • Samsung will definitely appeal, and if that fails then the repayment process will be delayed for years. No chance they're going to actually hand over a billion to Apple.

And Apple had something like $110bn in cash and cash equivalent (easy access) securities at the end of March 2011. A billion is barely going to make a dent on their cash pot.

Much more concerning for Apple is what happens after Iphone 5 and the next incarnation of ipad with 4g.

If you think that the designers there can invent a whole new must have thing, then Apple remains a buy.

I wouldn't bet my money on it though.

I'd suggest choosing to invest or not to invest in a company based on how well you think it will perform as a business, not whatever random headline event you read.

If Apple actually collect that whole $1 Billion and then generate massive profit for its shareholders based on that legal decison to the point where it becomes a more rational base for deciding whether or not to invest in them than their actual business then I will be very surprised.

    This is the exact point!

Something that should be stated is that Apple have gone where no company has before worth-wise, however on that note, I'm also not going to be selling the shares I bought between 2000 and 2008 (original cost of £2,000 p.a and now worth a fortune!)

    Only if you ignore inflation.

With inflation taken into account "That record remains safely on the trophy shelf of Microsoft, which reached its market-value peak in 1999. If inflation is adjusted, the 1999 Microsoft would have a present-day market cap of over $200 billion more than Apple."

The current share price of Apple makes their market value the biggest in the world at $623 billion (£397 billion).

So think of the biggest company you can - the market says Apple is worth more.

I can't help but wonder if they are really worth as much as that. Tech moves on rapidly and they have to keep releasing winners to stay on top. 2 -3 poor product releases in a row would make a dramatic difference to their share price. Apple has done well so far because they hardly ever put a foot wrong. How you value them depends heavily on whether you think they can keep that up.

Maybe sell some of it to realise real profit just in case? :) Either way, well done for doing so well! :)

    Cheers

  • Well Apple shares imo are priced towards the top end but still would be a safe hold, how many companies or countries for that matter are sitting on 100bn in cash!?
