Insurance - to claim or not to claim

Hubby and I have never claimed on our home & contents insurance ever. Last week we were camping and our tent and awning got destoyed in a storm. We paid £700 in total for both items in 2009. I have the receipt as proof of purchase cost. Also badly damaged was our friends toilet tent which we borrowed. I estimate this at being another £50 worth of damage. The excess on our policy is £250. My insurance policy is with Axa but I go through Master Quote insurance brokers in the first instance. I have spoken to them and they can only give me limited information. They say that in order to give me a better answer as to whether I would be entitled to any pay out I would have to log it as a claim and this would then be on my records to potentially impact my premium next year.
The long and short of it is whether I should actually persue this claim. I have insurance of £5000 for goods away from home but whether they would class a storm damaged tent as a claim or not fails to be seen.
I am also wondering what I could expect my premium to rise to next year.
Is this worth persuing?
Thoughts anyone??
Thanks!
