Hi,
Apologies if I've not posted in the right location I'm quite new to this!
I have a master phone socket next to my front door with out an electric socket. So for a few years I've been living with the router plugged in to the nearest electrical socket with another cable running upstairs to the computer - not sure what cable that one is! This has meant living with the wire hanging down the stairs and one accross the front door due to the electrical socket location.
This evening I asked a friend how I could work it out and this is what he did. Installed a phone line extension from the master socket to the room with the computer in it. We added an extra filter upstairs. So we have master socket downstairs with iphone extension cable into it which now runs upstairs, into that extension point downstairs we have the landline phone added in. therefore the hope was that upstairs we could have the modem plugged into the electric socket near the computer and no trailing wires as now the only wire connecting the upstairs to the downstairs is the phone line eextension nicely put in along with wall and through the floor. But the interent connection in this new configuration won't work - HELP ME PLEASE its driving me crazy. I stupidly thought it owuld be as easy as what we have done now I'm back to old method with new extension wire dangling as well.
Is the system I have with the phone extension a good idea or is that where it all went wrong??? I'm not sure what type of person i need to contact for advice is it electrical advice i need or something different?
Please give me feedback asap as I'm really struggling with this it feels like a nightmare!

You have the right idea but need to check the extension is wired properly or that the cable hasn't been nicked when installing/clipping to the skirting etc.
If I undestand correctly, I gather you want to connect an upstairs PC but the modem is downstairs? You don't say what modem you have but if it's a wireless router, the easiest way is to add a usb wireless dongle (£5 ish) to the PC and connect wirelessly.
A wireless router can be had very cheaply on ebay, or usually free with a new/renewed internet contract.
If you want to persist with the extension upstairs now that it's wired in, remove all phones and filters and just plug in the modem for now, then add filters/phones and see where it goes wrong - could just be a faulty filter0 -
Thank you I'll try what you've suggested I'm sure we'll end up wureless in the end a USB wireless sounds like a good option :T
Your right I do want to connect the PC thats upstairs ideally I hoped the modem could be upstairs as well.
The modem is something we got free with internet provider - post office a few years ago.
I'll try to start again with just the modem and see where it goes wonkyMortgage = £280,000

How is the extension telephone cable connected into the main socket?
If it is plugged into a microfilter then you are not getting the ADSL (internet) signal upstairs. How do I add a signature?0 -

How can OP plug the modem in without using a filter? How do I add a signature?0 -
How can OP plug the modem in without using a filter?
Why not - I didn't have one for ages as I had no phone connected (now have a filtered faceplate) - the filter is only so you can use the phone, it's not needed for the broadband signal - that's why I suggested trying this to eliminate phone/filter issues!0 -

Forgive me, but where is the OP supposed to plug the RJ11 in?How do I add a signature?0 -

Ok so now I have internet upstairs - hurray!!!
But when I use the landline its v noisy presumably because it doesn't have a filter on the master socket where the phone is, how do I get around this one?
My Mum said she has the same system that I've got just with the phone line going outside her house and with filters on both the extension and master and gets both internet and phone upstairs.
Apologies Im very confused ...Mortgage = £280,000

Mum's setup is likely to have the extension wiring hard-wired into the master socket, or plugged in before the filters.
Buy one of these, plug it into your master socket, then plug the extension lead into one of the outlets and a filter into the other. Plug the telephone into the filter. Plug a second filter into the upstairs socket. Plug the modem into this filter. How do I add a signature?0
