Loft Insulation

I have an upstairs room that is often colder than others in Winter. Is it effective to add extra loft insulation just above that area to try and make it warmer? Or would I need to do the entire loft by the same anount?

Thanks
SB

Why is that room colder? Is it because it has more external walls, less heating or less insulation?

I would check and see how much insulation there is above it. 270mm is the recommended amount. If there's less than that it's worth topping it up, just doing above the cold room would help but the whole loft would be better. If there's already about 270mm adding more will not make so much difference as there's a law of diminishing returns in operation.

    Thanks.

It's a bathroom with effectively no heating (Has a heated towel rail which has no timer so am loathe to leave on overnight). It's north facing but is double glazed.

The loft is partially boarded but not above this room. Last time I measured the insulation it was about 100mm.

I would top it up because it will be of some benefit, but insulation only slows heat loss it can't make a room warm that has no heat source of course. You may though notice it is warmer with extra insulation as it will be heated indirectly from the other rooms of the house, if they are heated.

The other rooms are heated so I think I'll top as you suggest. I'll create a decent overlap with the other rooms so that the extra insulation isn't just directly above the bathroom.

I have looked at the free insulation schemes for the whole loft but as I understand it I would lose the ability to store anything in the boarded sections of the loft.

You can insulate under the boards which is what I've done, it's a little bit of a palaver but might be worth doing. The more area you can insulate the better as heat loss is related to area and thickness of insulation.
