It all depends if the current award is a direct run on from the year the overpayment occurred in. If the overpayment is due to non return of the Annual declaration then that award would have been stopped altogether and the OP would have had to make a new application. The TCO computer system does not have the facility to deduct an overpayment relating to one application from a new application and so they will either ask you to pay it all off at once or come to an agreement which would involve payment slips or direct debit.
Similarly if the overpayment occurred when you were single and you now have a new award with a partner the overpayment cannot be recouped by reducing the payments on the new joint award.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
