Bad Day. Dates on which I can Terminate Tenancy?

Our tenancy ends on 9th April. I have had conversations with the LA regarding renewing for 12 months but our cars were broken into on our drive overnight and I'm devastated
Some neighbours were burgled in broad daylight at Christmas and I now feel completely vulnerable, especially as I spend quite a lot of time at 'home' alone with the children.
I think I'd read here that as a tenant I can leave the property on the last day of the tenancy without giving notice, is that correct? Our tenancy ends on 9th April. If I gave 'proper' notice before the end date of this tenancy would it end on the 9th May?
It looks like there is a suitable property available from 7th April, so whilst I don't want to leave the LLs in the lurch, there is a dirth of family homes available to let here and I might need to move quickly in order to find something decent.

If your tenancy ends on 9 April I'm surprised that the LL or agent haven't been in touch to renew it!
You are right in that you have a tenancy agreement that expires on 9 April, so you can just move out on that day AFAIK.
If the tenancy is going periodic then you can give notice on or before 9 April to vacate 9 May.
If you have put in writing that you want the tenancy to continue on a periodic basis I don't know if that commits you to stay beyond the end of the original AST.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Thanks.
They had written to me regarding renwal but I called them about it and then the LA came for the 'management inspection' last week so we talked about it then. I haven't signed or confirmed anything as I was trying to negotiate a slightly better rent and get permission to paint a couple of rooms and have vegetable patch. I haven't had an answer back yet.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Yes, you can leave on the last day without giving notice, unless there is a contractural clause in your tenancy that says otherwise. Just check that first!
Also, if you confirm in writing to say that you want the tenancy to continue on a periodic basis, that constitutes an agreement and you wouldn't be able to leave on 9th April..

Glad it works for you Doozergirl, but it does mean that a tenant verbally saying they want the tenancy to become periodic means the tenant can upsticks and leave with no notice at the end of the original tenancy, leaving the landlord with an unexpected void!I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Doozergirl, I know how awful it is when you're stuck in an area where you feel vulnerable - I hope you manage to find something much more suitable very soon
