Partners JSA Claim

Hi,
My partner had a breakdown in November last year and had to leave his job. A doctor said he was not fit for work and me and his parents have supported him since then but he is now ready to start looking for work again.
He has applied for a few jobs but nothing yet and now he is trying to complete JSA claim online. Now, because we live together it is asking for my details which I expected but it is asking for my employment details with phone number and name of someone who can be contacted there. Why do they need this?
The employment they are asking about was only a temporary contract so I am no longer there but I have my payslips and P45 from there as proof of my pay so really don't understand why they have to contact them direct especially now this pay is irrelevant?

Thanks for any advice

We were managing on my wage and a little help from his parents so didn't claim anything throughout that time.
It asked if I had any employment that had ended in the last 6 months so I said yes because my temp contract had ended within that and now its asking for contact details...

Why have you just repeated what I wrote but changed some words?

I haven't seen the online form myself.

    What does it ask exactly?

To be honest I would just go to the Job Centre Plus and apply in person. You can take all your paperwork with you.

Not sure about the above poster - seems to do this a lot!

Ignore it - it'll go away.

In principle, he can claim ESA, backdated 3 months, if he has a valid medical certificate, and he would have otherwise qualified.
  • You can't apply in person. I used to process JSA. They are asking because he hasn't been working as so would not be entitled to contribution based JSA as he will not have paid NI contributions. Therefore, he will need to claim income based JSA which takes into account household income. Unfortunately this includes your income as you are his partner. It is very invasive, but if you still worked they would need to see wageslips throughout the claim period. I agree it is abit nosey but they deduct any income off the benefit paid.

If he stopped work in November, then this may not matter, if hE had sufficient salary, and worked enough hours.
For a claim now, in benefit year 2012, the 2010/11 and 2009/10 tax years matter.
Not working five months of the tax year does not mean you are disqualified automatically. (Nov-apr)
