Lake District - suggestions and recommendations please

Hi all

I'm looking to book a 2 night stay in the Lake District for myself and partner next month. Neither of us have visited this area before...

We're aiming to go on long walks by day, and spend romantic evenings in a good quality hotel ...

Any suggestions / hotel recommendations etc most welcome

Thanks in advance

We go there loads and do exactly that! Working our way through climbing all the Wainwrights.

What's your budget for the hotel?

We have stayed at the hotel below a couple of times a year for the last four years now. One of our stays was as part of our honeymoon. Really quiet and restful (if you want a buzzing bar and restaurant, it's not for you!). The food is amazing! Between their breakfasts and dinners, we barely eat lunch even during a full day hiking the hills. :)

That's in Windermere. For a first visit, Windermere or Ambleside in the eastern lakes are good places to base yourself. You can do several fell walks from Ambleside itself (which is only a 15 minute or so drive from Windermere).

The Western lakes (Wasdale etc) are much quieter as it takes a long time to drive to them. The fells will have far fewer people on them (apart from Scafell!) but I find them tougher walks.

Alternatively you could base yourself in Keswick in the north of the region. Plenty of hills up there too and a larger town centre.

What about the Wild Boar Inn at Crook near Windermere? I haven't been there myself but it looks a wonderful place to stay and reviews on trip adviser are good. www.thewildboarinn.co.uk/

Ambleside is a good base although I can't recommend any hotels as we usually hire a cottage.

No budget as such, willing to pay for quality, and the above really sounds perfect

    Many thanks!

After not being to the lakes for 25 years, I've been 3 times this year!

For a great base for Derwentwater and walks from the door combined with a romantic treat you can't beat the Lodore Falls hotel, there's always lots of offers around from the deals sites and the hotel direct. http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/lodorefalls
Not quite as luxurious but we've just spent 4 days as the Best Western Salutation Inn in Ambleside http://www.hotelslakedistrict.com Fabulous breakfast that will fill you up for the day and a great base.

And we've just booked to go to the newly opened Daffodil Hotel at Grasmere http://www.daffodilhotel.co.uk. We had a look round on our Ambleside visit and it's gorgeous and they have opening offers too
