capcha's are failing more than normal lately. very frustrating when you know you've typed it right.0

I also dislike reCaptcha (the one that has two words, like ITV use). I usually find it takes several refreshes to find a semi-readable word. There are a lot of better captchas (from a users point of view anyway).
reCaptcha is different to other captchas in that, the words come from scanned books or newspapers. By filling in reCaptchas, you are actually digitsing those books. One of the words is already known and the other is unknown, so you only have to get one word correct, because the system only knows one of the words in the first place and therefore can't check if you matched both words correctly.
I think users should have a choice of whether or not they want help digitise books, rather than being forced into it and in most cases, people don't even know they're doing it.
reCaptcha is overkill for the original purpose of a captcha - which is to stop bots auto submitting forms. Even the simplest of captchas will stop those bots. reCaptcha is free for site developers to use, but ultimately users pay the price by having to solve an over-complicated puzzle.0
