Gift for someone not met before

I am going on holidays shortly and will be meeting the new fiance! (Not mine!) As he is much older than his fiancee, what can I get him as a gift, know I could get a tie or something, but as I don't know anything about him, other than the fact he is apparently a very nice man, I have no idea what could be suitable.

Not quite sure why the gift: is it a engagement present? will you be staying/visiting his home and taking a gift for him as host? Do you know his circumstances (is he the man who has everything?) Is he from another country (maybe a traditional British gift might be appropriate in those circs)?

    More info please.:)

He lives abroad, don't think he is the man who has everything. Traditionally, gifts are not given for engagement, so nothing along that line. I will be staying with his fiancee's family so will be meeting him in some shape or format, be it at hers or his.

I like the idea of something British

as this has dropped down the OS boards, ive moved it to the families board so you can get some other points of view over here

I don't really understand the significance of who he is from your post? Is he your best friends fiance - your best friend you will be staying with? If someone brought me a gift and I didn't have one to give back on a first meeting, I would probably be a bit mortified but maybe thats just me. :o

Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. Don't get him a tie. It's a bit...boring. A bottle of something isn't much more imaginative but it can be enjoyed by everyone as you sit round socialising and getting to know this guy.

I'm sorry I'm unclear on who's fiance he is and why you have to buy him a present? If it's an engagement gift then something for both of them might be more suitable? I probably wouldn't go for the tie as you don't know his style - does he even wear them regularly? Bottle of something might be a better idea, though I would be tempted to ask his fiancee what his preference of tipple is beforehand.

I did wonder the same. Is he the fiance of a friend or family member?

If he is the fiance of some one you know take him something from here that relates to somethoing she has told you he has an interest in, and a local speciality from your area (if legally transportable)

If you are staying in the home of someone you have not met because you are travelling with a mutual friend (his fiancee ?) then I think it is good manners to take something as a gift. There is loads of Union Jack items around at the moment (tea towels / teapot / biscuits etc) from the Olympics so something along those lines?

    Champagne flutes!
I know its more of a wedding present but I brought my cousin+her now hubby set of 2 silver champagne flutes from John Lewis (roughly around £50) on their engagement party, and they liked them so much they used them on their wedding day/wedding photos with a small flower decoration as it was the theme..
