Trying to find fault on pc?

Hi folks,
I am trying to diagnose a problem with my pc. I want to rule out any software problems for a start as I have already gone down that route, reinstalling windows etc.
I have a quad core amd 4gb ram (ran a windows memory test no prob) I have 2 hard disks disk 0 partitioned into C D and E, windows xp on C windows 7 or both D and E.
Disk 1 is partitioned into various drives for storage backups etc.
PC is very slow to start, getting stuck on welcome screens etc. When I do an acronis backup of C from within windows itself it takes a long long time compared to what it used to and seems to get stuck at certain percentages. Even using the acronis boot disk it gets stuck too and got an error message about a read/Write.
However if I do backup of D or E which are partitions on the same disk it flies along nicely. I know there is more data on my main C drive but that isn't the problem.
Beginning to think it’s my main system C drive that is the problem and the hard drive is beginning to fail though windows reports it as healthy.
Any views appreciated, Psu used to be a bit noisy but seems ok now, it’s a pain trying to pin down what exactly it is, and definitely no virus.
Thanks a lot for any help and views on best quiet internal hard drive not an SSD one?
I probably will buy from either pc world or maplin for convenience.

reading your post, its sounds like your correct about your C partition, however I would download hirens boot cd preferably an earlier version before like 10.5 as it has a few hdd testers and fixers noticably HDD regenerator and run that on the drive.
oops got a head of myself, 1 above is 2nd, down the harddrive manufacturers testing tool, erm, also on hirens boot cd.
boot from cd, and look for the hdd test tools, press whatever number for your hdd make, and run the tool. if its a load of bad clusters /sector run hdd regenerator, its a fix in place program, you wont loose any data.
then transfer everything you can over to the other drive. maybe you should do that first. then run the tools.
1. transfer all files that you want to keep
2. download hirens boot cd, you can copy to flashdrive and boot from that. I used YUMI to do it.
3 after booting from cd, hdd manufacturers testing tool on C
4 after finding out whats wrong,. if bad clusters, use HDD regenerator from hirens
4b if firmware bug or other get ready to replace the HDD0 -
You probably have a lot of junk running at startup .
run MSCONFIG and see what runs at startup tab .
If it was my PC i would format C drive and a fresh install of Windows .
If it boots as normal then its your programs running thats the problem .
SSD sorry i still rule them out as overpriced for little gain in day to day use .

If you haven't already tried run a chkdsk /r on your C partition.604!0
