Question about returning a mattress

Hello there

I was wondering if anyone had any advise about returning a mattress - I know that it seems to be grey area, but I wondered what our consumer rights really are.

The situation:

1. My husband wanted a soft mattress, we tried several in store (from an independent retailer), we chose one and it was delivered yesterday.
2. The item was delivered by the shop owner who set it up and removed all packaging.
3. When my husband arrived home he tested the bed and refused to believe it was the same one - saying it feels far too hard and nothing like the one in the shop (I have to agree that it seems much firmer than the one we tried previously).
4. Today we have called the shop and the owner insists it is the same mattress that we tried in store.

Can anyone advise if we have any rights to return the item because we have changed our mind/find it to be uncomfortable compared to the display model?

Thanks for your help on this.

First point - no rights to return because of a change of mind.
Second point - the display (ie used) mattress will have been sat/lain on by many people testing it out so will obviously feel softer due to use.

And can feel different depending on the type of base it was on. If you only bought a mattress and are putting it on an existing bed it can feel different

A mattress that been bounced on in the shop WILL NOT feel softer just because it's been on display. It'll take hundreds of people bouncing on it for a long time to have any noticable effect.

But yes, trying the mattress on a sprung slatted base or even a sprung edge base in store will make a mattress feel softer compared to a solid base.

Mattresses take a while to get used to them, like new shoes.

You body has got used to the old mattress and now it's on something different. It can take 6-12 weeks to get used to anew mattress.

As shop bought you've no rights for return for change of mind. Unless of course you really do have a different mattress. Will the owner come out and double check you have the correct mattress?

Suggest to your husband that whilst he gets used to the new mattress you advocate half a bottle of wine and some vigorous bedtime activity nightly for a week - at the end of that, he'll have got used to the mattress ;-)
