0% on purchases abroad?

Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this is a stupid question but I've been googling around and can't find a definitive answer so I was hoping you lovely folks could help :D

I'm going to be heading to the US in a few months time and wanted to know if I get a card with 0% on purchases for x months does that include the purchases I make abroad or not?

Admittedly anything I buy on the card while I'm out there will be paid back as soon as I get home but I was just wondering how it works re the promo interest rate/loading etc.

Thanks!

Though you'd likely be charged something like 3% (depending on the card) on every transaction anyway - completely offsetting it being interest free!

If you're going to be paying it back when you return anyway, you should get a card that has no foreign exchange fees on purchases, such as Post Office, Halifax Clarity or Nationwide Select.

You'll get the best exchange rate (better than changing cash etc), no fees to spend in a foreign currency (most cards charge in the region of 3%) and you'll still benefit from the up to 56 days (or whatever) interest free period.

Indeed. In fact the PO card had a 3 month 0% purchase deal. Excellent value when combined with the fact they are loading free.
