Thanks all.
Well I rang the dogs home to say we were interested but they said he'd already been reserved
Was really gutted, and kicked myself for not having rang them sooner, but we had to be sure.
Anyway, it's now made us realise how much we want a dog and are now looking for another rescue so maybe he was meant to come to us for that reason0 -

In a way, it might all be for the best.
Now you can take the time to really think about and research having a dog and what kind of dog (age/breed/temperament etc.) will fit in with your family and two dogs get a new home!
Would you consider a bonded pair? I rescued my two together, dogs that are already so attached to each other they can't be separated tend to be much harder to rehome but I'd say its a huge benefit if you have to leave them to go to work, as they'll be fine with each other for company while you're out, they'll never be completely alone.0 -

Awww what a lovely dog!
I was going to say there is a chance the dog may be reserved then seen your reply above. If you were so sure about wanting to give him a forever home, it would have been best to visit the kennels soon after he was taken by the dog warden and put your name down before someone else comes along and reserves him.
You could still go along to the kennels and put your name on the list, as if he is brought back to kennels for other reasons (he may not get on with new owners other dog or cat) then the kennels will likely contact you to let you know he has been returned.A home without a dog is like a flower without petals.0 -
Firstly, well done you for making him safe.
Every time a stray finds me, I tend to notify the dog's home, with pics (Fire Fox, ours is not a council pound, but a charity that is independent, although has RSPCA branding all over the place, but receives no, if little funding from the RSPCA). I think I've found at least 6 runaways.
I advise the home that it is not a major issue for me to keep, bed, feed the dog for a few days, but will happily go up (4 miles each way) for a microchip scan. Luckily, all the ones I have found have been reclaimed by anxious owners, some did not even have to go to the home, as we hovered around hoping a frantic owner would soon pass by often past midnight.
I'd say of the 6 that found their way to me (not counting the ones that I did know where they lived), I'd have happily homed 3 of them. By telling the dogs home and giving them pics, I'm doing my duty, and also saving them a much needed kennel space by offering to keep the dog. I'm also keeping first dibs on an unclaimed pooch,.
If I've not heard back from the dogs home quickly, I'll then email all the local vets and the Police with a pic of the found dog. After that, I'd put it on the Dogslost website (not had to go that far yet).0 -
put it this way - if this dog isnt claimed before whatever cutoff period the pound has..............would you be prepared to give him a temporary home? which may turn into a permanent home?
I wasnt a big fan of Westies before a nieghbour had one - and she was lovely.
then a few years later my next door neighbour started dogsitting for her sons Westies - and they are lovely! so funny, but lovely and friendly and gentle! I can understand why you fell for this one.
you may just have to see if the cat can get on with him. from my experience the cat will establish who is 'top dog' themselves. and the dog learns to live with it!0
