Two car insurance - different houses

Hi
I'm getting married in December and I want to buy car now and leave it at my fiances - a four wheel drive - he lives 200 miles away from where I do. My car insurance on my current car is up for renewal and I need to renew at my home address. How do I take out insurance on the two vehicles? I will own both, but the insurers want me to keep the car that I will leave at my fiances house at my home address, but it isn't my home address. I'm not trying to commit any fraud or scam, I'm just trying to have a car at each end of my life at the moment!!!
Any suggestions?
Thank you

Is your fiance an additional driver? (I'm not actually sure whether that's important or not).

I travel a lot too and started keeping my Smart car at my sister's in London, giving her use of it while I wasn't there. I called up the insurance company and explained the situation, saying that I might not be there for months at a time and so my sister would be looking after it for me as a named driver on the policy.

They asked a few clarifying questions but were fine with it - no additional costs or even address questions, it was still insured at my address just with a note to say it might not be there very often.

  • Fiance will be additional driver. But the insurers blankly refused to insure it. Said I had to keep the car at my registered address and not at an address 200 miles away from where I live permanently.
  • Badger Lady - can I ask who you are insured with - maybe I should give them a ring. That's the problem, I don't want to phone every single insurance company to find out what answer they will give - but they sound like they may be reasonable.

Is your first car a large 4x4 as well?
Does your boyfriend have his own car, and his own insurance?
Can you leave him off as a named driver?
How do you get to your boyfriends at present, do you drive, or take the bus or fly?
  • Hi ya
Boyfriend has fleet car which is insured. I can leave him off as a names driver if needs be.
I normally take the train up to my boyfriends - it's cheaper! Current car is a Skoda, but I'm moving to the country, hence buying the 4x4.
    Thank you

Try leaving him off for the time being, and see if you can get insurance.

When you get married, are you selling the Skoda?
If so, it may be better to swop your ncd to the 4x4, and trying to insure the skoda for a few months. You can only use your ncd on one of them, so it is usually better to try to do a deal with your current insurer.
  • Ok, will do - though the problem seemed more to do with the fact that I wasn't keeping the car at my registered address - my insurer said they wouldn't touch it, unless I kept it at home. Yes, my Skoda will need to go at some point.

It's Admiral Multicar. I did the quote online using my home address, then I called them up to go over the details and explain myself more fully.

Thank you - I shall try phoning them - that's useful.
