SORN question and unadopted road.

Just wondering. I have a parking space outside my house in an unadopted road. Which means that the 8 houses are responsible for the upkeep of the road, not the council.
I am thinking of not insuring the car for a few weeks as I will use the motorbikes until winter. Would it be ok to leave the car in my space, or should I stick it on the lawn.
Thanks.

For a vehicle to be SORN on private land you have to have the landowners permission. Who is the land owner?

Actually, this has never occurred to me. I assumed that I owned the land that my parking space was on as I bought my house freehold.
But as my insurance quotes are coming in at under £120 pa, I may as well just insure the car in case it is stolen.
    Thanks anyway.

Exactly. I take my bikes off the road every winter, I cash in the tax discs and SORN them, but they remain insured!

    Where is that written?
    How does anyone check that?

It is not specifically for a SORN but if you want to put something on somebody elses land then you need their permission otherwise it is trespass and the landowner has the right to remove it.

You then end up with a SORN'd car sitting on a public road - whoops!

I don't think the op would be wanting it removed from his parking space here, even if he doesn't own the land then?

A SORN declaration is valid if the vehicle is not on 'a public road' as far as a vehicle licence is concerned - s.29 (3A) (a), Vehicles Excise & Registration Act 1994.
If it is considered to on 'a road or other public place' then it might not be and insurance may be required - s.143 Road Traffic Act 1998.

Unless its on your private property. Or on private and gated land then its not safe.

My old firm had to fit gates so they could operate the forklifts in the yard without getting them taxed etc.

Thanks for all the replies. I am just going to insure the car. My neighbour put his motorbike on his lawn and it was nicked (not insured). Not taking the risk just to save a tenner a month.
