No credit history

When I was 18 I applied for and got a credit card, always paid my bills and never got behind on payments, I also had an overdraft and a mobile phone contract. I then got rid of all debt I had and have been that way for about 6 years (not even an overdraft).

I am now in a situation in my 30s where I cannot get ANY credit whatsoever. I have over the years been an on/off member of Experian and everything is up to date and there are apparently no anomalies. Last November I applied for a mobile phone contract of £15 per month only to be refused, I had to pay £100 deposit for the phone before they would allow me an account.

Now I have just tried to apply for the Aqua credit card (supposedly for people with little or bad credit) only to be refused AGAIN! Although we rent, my husband and I (who has had no problem obtaining credit) earn about £70k gross between us. I am at a loss now of who to speak to or what to do about this situation as when I review my credit score on Experian it is 'excellent'. Does anyone have any advice about how to solve this?

There must be something. Why don't you apply online and pay £2 to Equifax to see if they have something that Experian doesn't show?

Or maye you are like me and there is not enough credit 'history' on you so you seem to a lender like you havent existed for 6 years? Are you on the electoral register for example?

I applied today to Nationwide for a card and while online it was all accepted, I am still not getting my hopes up.

Don't go basing anything on a score, it is nothing a bank or credit card company will use or ever see.
  • Where do you bank - the place where your salary goes into?
If your credit score is as white as you say they will bite your hand off when you apply for a credit card.
