  • A tip I once heard was to listen at the exhaust - if there's a regular misfire on one of the cylinders, it makes it easy to detect it.

Not sure if it's any help but it sounds similar to a problem I had a few years back when something had damaged the catalytic converter on my Mk2 Mondeo; that totally trashed the performance and it struggled to get up hills

Had exactly the same problems on my old Mondy at 100K miles. It would cruise along on a trailing throttle, but as soon as you put your foot down, or went up a hill, it had no power, and was making a kettling noise from underneath.
One new Cat later and it was resored to its former glory.
What happens is this: The Cat starts to break up inside the exhaust system and then block the exhaust gasses, causing a loss of power, a bit like having your lungs full of tar from smoking.
