Why are Santander so incompetent?

I'll probably ramble a bit. Nothing anyone can do to help except sympathise. I've money going from my current account from a card payment that I want to stop. So I telephone them for the third time this evening. I did quite well, I held my temper until I got to the sixth security question. Apparently I could be an imposter logged on to my own account. Well actually just typing this is helping me let off steam slowly. But now the question that does need answering. I hereby apologise in advance for shouting. WHY WAS I SO STUPID TO GO TO SANTANDER IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I know this won't help - but what is the problem?

Assuming the issue is about identification: In principle, it is very possible that an imposter has logged into your account, and as timeconsuming it is to go through security, it's re-assuring banks don't just let anyone into our accounts.

If your issue is about something else: what is it?
  • I don't understand how this makes them incompetent?

Don't get me started about the problems I have logging into my Lloyds TSB online accounts

So you want to stop a payment to a card and failed at the security? How does that mean that Santander are incompetent? Did they forget your security answers?

    You can't....

Its a guaranteed form of payment. If you had the ability to stop a payment NO retailer would use them to take payment.

Perhaps instead of ranting about your bank, you explained the situation around the payment... People might be able to help you.

If it's a recurring transaction it can be stopped, but few bank staff have been made aware of this.

I have to come to the defence of Santander and say that I had the same requirement, to stop a company from continuing to take money from my account. I telephoned them, answered my security questions and was treated very fairly and professionally. The lad took my details and the payments were stopped and one payment retrieved. Credit where it's due. regards
  • Problem solved I've gone back to Nationwide. I believe they try to employ people with a modicum of intelligence whereas Santander must ask for people with an IQ of 70 or lower.

You never actually told us what the problem was.

Seems you just came on for a rant, and to verbally insulted all Santander staff.

No, it can be delt with once it has debited.

Sadly to many people labour under the missunderstanding that a bank can block a retailer from taking funds.

You can request your bank to stop the payment, but it is the retailer who takes the funds. Under PSD it can be refunded straight away once you make the bank aware of any debits after cancellation with the retailer, or requesting your bank to take your cancel date.

I am fully aware of FOS/FSA regulations on this.

But the OP has not come back with any info on waht the transaction was.
Worst case is santander will chase him for the debt if he has not cancelled it.
