I'm being made redundant! :-(

Got called into the office this morning, totally unexpected, that my position is up for redundancy.
My head is still spinning
They gave me the option of coming home early which I took them up on.
All the figures have been laid out to me and they are putting it all in writing which I should receive by the weekend. I have to phone them on Tuesday morning to let them know what I want to do, IE:- accept it or contest the redundancy which would mean me coming in for a follow up meeting.
I've worked there for 7 years, so they will be paying me 7 weeks pay redundancy (it's not a great deal as I'm only PT), 7 weeks notice and 3 days holiday pay that I'm owed. They have said I can work my notice period if I want, but I don't have to.
I haven't told hubby yet, going to tell him in person when he gets in from work. I know he's not going to be happy. This is the 3rd time I've been made redundant and it never gets any easier
Any advice/thoughts would be welcome.

Are you the only one being made redundant and are there any others in your role in the organisation? If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

I am the only one afaik. I work(ed) in the office 2 days per week, they recently took on a full-timer in the office (sometime in May). Yes, they could've offered me more hours instead, but I think they know that I wouldn't have been able to, because I have young kids and child care would be a problem.
I would mainly do odd things in the office, such as filing, answering the phone. I used to do the company's Ebay stuff, but that now has gone to someone else, so most days I have nothing to do.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
sorry about your situation, it sounds cut and dried when you say most days you have nothing to do. Hopfully you will get an excellent reference from them0

Am sorry to hear. Part-time daytime jobs are like gold dust where I live. I could scream every time I read 'there are only p-time jobs out there' Not here there isn't, not at the times where childcare runs! You could contest the redundancy but since you say most days there's nothing to do, IMO your chances of winning it aren't high.
I think I'd be more tempted to take the 7 week lieu of notice. I wouldn't fancy being in when I'm upset over losing my job and it gives you all week to search for something else and have full availability if you get an interview.
How old are your children btw?0 -
Thanks.
Yes, I've accepted their offer and I'm not working the notice period (I get paid for it whether I work or not).
They are paying my August wages and my redundancy tomorrow, whereas I get my notice pay in September and October (my notice period runs out on the 19th October and I won't get my P45 till then. So If I do find another job before then I will have to go on emergency tax.
Sorry, I forgot to say that my kids are 10 & 8 (so not really "young"). I use(d) the school club, so will have to tell them when they go back that I won't be needing them at the moment. They are very good and I don't think there will be a problem putting the kids back in if/when I get another job.Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £26,322.670 -
Ask them for PILON and immediate termiation so you can sign on and get JSA(if NI are enough).
Looks like they are putting you on garden leave which has the risk they could withdraw the redundancy if they decide they need you(eg the other person resigns). Also they could call you bck in to work or contract may requier permission to get another job and they can ask you to agree to reduced notice and not pay outstanding notice.0 -
Just remember you got a job after redundancy before so you can again. Why not look in to starting up ur own business. Every one is good at something. You can start up with little or no money in many cases. Take advantage of the many sites on line that allow u to do free listing0
