I have done similar before. I bought a car on eBay once that was situated across the country in Essex and was SORN'd by its owner (but had MOT).

I bought insurance, caught the train down there, paid him the money and drove away.

I was pulled over by Police who'd identified me as having no insurance, because the central database hadn't yet been updated with my details. I explained the situation, showed them my paperwork / insurance certificate and they were fine about it (they actually seemed more concerned with the bargain price I'd paid!).

They spotted the missing tax disc and frowned - they could understand why I'd been unable to tax it but muttered that the seller should have bought one before I arrived. I promised to buy a disc as soon as the post offices opened in the morning and they waved me off.

Now, I am NOT suggesting that this would always be the case, that you'd definitely get away with it, but you're not really what they're looking for. They're looking for uninsured ejits without licences. £80 isn't the end of the world in the worst case and if you are forced to pay for a new tax disc, well, then you just go through the refund process as far as you can.

  • Do you know anyone in the motor trade with access to trade plates? (and if it can be insured under their traders insurance policy so much the better!)

Trade plates are only to be used in connection with the motor trade.

    no fuel used,insurance needed
    Day insure will be £20-£30

Get somebody with trade plates or tow/transport it.
  • Put it on a trailer - there is someone up the back of my place with one. I don't know but a modest folding reward might be sufficient for you to borrow the trailer.

I had a similar situation but I did SORN it at the "old" address until I got it back on the road.

Once upon a time I got a cover note from a helpful insurance broker, just in case, but that was in the days before Automatic Number-place Recognition etc.

depends where the company is based
I have had cars moved for £1 or so a mile before, but thats a local firm
If you have to travel 50 miles to the car, then move it. those miles need covered
Gumtree can be good for local small outfits
  • I figure the road tax would end up costing me around £25 or so after I can claim the refund. The petrol will cost me a further £8 and the insurance a further £30. I'm expecting a total of around £63 (call it £65).

I then need to look at transport back to where I started :-). But that's a separate issue.

Trade plates is a no go. I know of no one who can offer this to me, and even if I could, sounds kind of dodgy.

Lets assume I can find a local transport company. £60 is optimistic. Heck, £120 would be optimistic. Think about it. A large truck/car than can carry/tow the car all the way to my destination. That's got to be at least £30 in fuel round trip. The drive time in 1 direction is 2 hours. So that's 4 hours of labour. Who in the right mind would work for so little?

If any one knows anyone in the Nottingham area (where my car is located) and can do a round trip to the King's Lynn area for around £100, please give me their number. The extra cost is well worth the reduced hassle!

My current plan is to call the DVLA and pretend to be my friend and arrange for the car to be declared off road (SORN). They told me there is a 6 week grace period so I still have almost 3 weeks to get that done.

Have the car transferred back to my dad's name, insure it for 1 day, get months road tax, drive it to my grand parents, claim back as much road tax as possible, and get public transport back to Nottingham. I'm expecting the whole trip to cost me around £100 or so including transport back to Notts.

It's a heck of a hassle, especially for a car that is only worth £500. But as I said, you just cant buy a car as good as this for that kind of money (strangely) so it seems worth it for me to do this. At least I hope so.

But yeah, if anyone knows anyone who can do the transport for me at around £100, give me their number and I'll gladly accept such an arrangement.

    Cheers!

Book an MOT at a garage close to your grandparents.
Drive to your grandparents, then phone and cancel the MOT.

You don't need tax to drive to or from a pre-booked MOT.
In the very unlikely event that you do get stopped, you'll just have to go the MOT.
