JSA Advice regarding owning land

I am applying for this but I own land valued approx £100k. Does this mean I will be awarded the benefit.

Many thanks

Depends if you declare it. I'm not sure how they would know that you had it unless someone told them.

Contribution based JSA shouldn't be an issue, income based depends what you decide to inform them of.

Assuming you are the legal owner of the land as per land registry, it can be cross checked.

  • Its not capital though is it? I think it would depend if you are getting an income from it.
You can own a house and the land it sits on and still claim JSA. I would check it out ith the CAB.

There is so many flaws in the argument I don't know where to start!

The land won't affect your entitlement to Contribution-based JSA as it is not means tested. If you apply for Income-based JSA the value of the land less 10% selling costs less any debts secured on the land will be treated as capital. It the final figure is more than £16k you won't be entitled to JSA(IB), unless the value of the land can be disregarded e.g. if it is for sale the value can be disregarded for 26 weeks in the first instance then possibly longer depending on whether you are taking active steps to sell the land.

I suggest you declare it as your ownership of it may be checked at some stage, better to have a clear conscience than worrying about not declaring it. Don't listen to those who advise otherwise.
  • Thanks Guy's

I do receive an income from the land it is let out to a local farmer. I am declaring it to them as I couldn't worry about them finding out.
  • they would find out so its just not worth being prosecuted for fraud - especially for whats involved :)
