I took out a web subscription with the times for a £1 1 month trial. 1 week later i e-mailed to say i wanted to cancel. They have since took out a monthly subscription charge. I have phoned to complain and was told that they have no trace of my e-mail and after the 1 month subscription i automatically went onto a 52 week package. upon reading their terms and conditions i can see this (right at the end of the conditions). I have also noticed a point that stated you have to ring to cancel.
i don't want the package am i within my rights to just cancel the direct debit and let them terminate my subscription? i don't want any black marks on my credit rating? i am waiting for someone in a "management" department to call me back.
any help when dealing with this call or what my rights are would be greatly appreciated

You rights would be according to the terms and conditions you 'signed'. If you emailed and the terms require you to call then I would expect your rights to be limited.
There really isn't much you can do when you agree to a contract, you agree to a contract.
Here's hoping the 'manager' who calls might see sense, but from what you've said, so far, your rights are limited (read as pretty non-existent).0
