Sony Bravia faulty after 18 months.

Hi,

I bought a Sony Bravia TV with built in blu-ray player around sept/oct 2010 from Amazon and a month or two back the built in blu-ray packed up.

The tv has the standard Sony 1 year guarantee of course and having spoken to both Amazon and Sony they have basically said, "it's not in warranty so I have to pay for the repair myself".

I have spoken to an independent repair bod who said it's a £50 inspection cost and he felt that the blu-ray stopping working in such a short time probably indicates a fault with the laser array....which is around £150 to replace.

I could just get a separate blu-ray player and plug it into the tv but the whole point of getting this particular tv was to reduce the number of boxes cluttering the tv area!

Do you think it's worth trying to pursue it further with Amazon or Sony with regard to the "reasonable lifespan" element of the consumer protection rules? I certainly think that 18 months is a pretty rubbish lifespan for a tv! Would I have to spend the £50 for an independent assessment anyway to give me the required ammunition? Really don't know whether it is worth the inevitable hassle this is likely to generate which I guess is what the manufacturers/retailer rely on!

  • Sony don't have any responsibilities, your rights are with the retailer.

You'd have to prove that the blu ray player (well the tv as a whole) was faulty from purchase.

I don't know if this will help or hinder you, but as someone who works in a home electrical shop, I and my colleagues never EVER recommend people get a combi TV, because they always fail very quickly. Yes, you have reduced clutter, but you're effectively paying more than when you buy them individually, for a cut in quality and reliability.

So a court may find that you were sold an inferior quality product, or they might say that it's the quality you expect when you buy combis.
  • You can buy very decent branded Bluray players from £60 on the high street. It seems like an expensive way to avoid one small extra box.

  • It's almost 2 years old if you bought it Sept 2010.

How much did you pay for it?

It was around £500 if memory serves and it's been broken for about 2 months now.

I take the comments on board above about hybrids. It's basically what the repair guy said.

I am probably going to just get a separate blu-ray player as financially it makes no sense to pursue the fixing route. Just galls me that these days we are all conditioned to think that a £500 item breaking within 2 years is just, well, an acceptable if slightly unlucky outcome.

At least the rest of the TV still functions fine.
  • Read the FAQ post at the top of the forum. You need to prove that the fault is inherent and then can seek a remedy from the retailer.
