Cheap Holiday with a Broken Leg

Hi

So basically my husband and I were planning on going on a last minute cheapo package deal holiday abroad. We haven't had a proper holiday in a long time, and both of us are in desperate need of some sun and some time away from it all.

However I have recently broken my Talus bone, which means that I will probably be in plaster, non-weightbearing, on crutches, during our allocated holiday time.

So I am feeling a bit stumped at the moment as to what to do. I also suffer from CFS - and the crutches are exhausting me - so ideally want somewhere that is wheelchair friendly so that I can use one if I need to.

So I looked at wheelchair accessible holidays and they all seem to just double the prices. The holiday we looked at was about £380 for the both of us including flights, half board - now we are looking at £800+ for self catering.

I don't get any benefits (my illness is too unpredictable for them to help me out), and our income isnt huge so we are on a very tight budget.

Any ideas?

Might help if we knew where you are, did you have an op, are you allowed to fly?

I am in Bradford West Yorks. I haven't had an op, but may have to have one - I will know by tomorrow. We were planning on going beginning of October - initially I thought I would be okay - just! However I have broken my Talus so unfortunately I am non-weight bearing for 8-12 weeks!

I should be fine to fly according to doctor!

We took our first cruise after a motor bike accident. I was in a sling with a shattered collar bone and DH was on crutches part time and had a broken arm.

We were looking for somewhere to holiday before various operations and it fitted the bill perfectly. The cruise was in the Med, so plenty of sunshine, sunbeds ,jacuzzis and of course the wonderful spa. We got off at a few places on cruise line excursions and other times we just stayed on the ship.

It was fantastic to get away from home where we had been climbing the walls with frustration.

Cruise ships are wheelchair friendly and in October I am sure you would find a bargain.

I seem to remember that DH had to have a different arm cast for the flight, but other than walking pathetically slowly we had a great time.

You could also just wander into a high street travel agent and ask. I have booked several mainstream holidays for someone who could shift themselves around a hotel room but needed a wheelchair for getting out and about.
If you don't need a specially adapted room or bathroom, there are a fair few hotels with ground floor rooms and amenities on the level that would be suitable. And the travel agent can phone up the special needs dept and ask any further questions you might have. I've always found thomas cook particularly helpful in this respect.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Costa Teguise in Lanzarote has to be one of the most wheelchair friendly places I've visited. 4 hour flight - is that too long?

Been twice, last time 2 years ago which was about 15 years after the first visit. Enjoyed it the first time but not so much last time. The problem for us last time was the lack of decent restaurants. When I say decent I mean restaurants offering something other than grills and pizza. We did find somewhere we liked but it would have been better for us if we had had more choice.

If that doesn't bother so much seriously consider Costa Teguise. Where there's a step, there's a ramp. We saw lots of people in wheelchairs, lots with prosthetic legs etc having a holiday there and they were getting around the resort quite happily. We met a group of soldiers who were recovering from horrendous injuries suffered in Afganistan.

Of course, in the Canaries you are pretty much guaranteed the sun. Great beaches, blue sea and cold beer.

    Check you can get insurance.
  • I too suffer from CFS and broke my foot last year. We have a property in Turkey and already had our flights booked, so decided to still go.

From the minute we left home, to the minute we returned to the UK it was a nightmare.

I too found crutches impossible, due to the CFS. I was advised to arrange Passenger Assistance at the airport, not to take a wheelchair, but get one out there.

Passenger assistance, useless. Wheelchair hire, impossibly expensive and illusive. Heat, fatigue and frustration all resulted in a horrible and unenjoyable holiday.

Think very carefully and plan everything ahead, would be my advice. I certainly wouldn't do it again.
