Car VED band

Car VED is a con in my opinion. A 2000 Ford Ka 1.3 is £75(ish) for 6 months, A 2001 Ford Ka 1.3 is £93(ish) for 6 months. Same engine, same body....0

I used to pay about the same for a 1991 3.9 Range Rover as a friend did for his 02 plate 1.6 Zafira.
Used to break his heart.0 -

The joys of the pre-CO2 emissions ratings - my 1999 Rover 620Ti with 230bhp was similar to tax than a friend's 2.2 Vectra, a bit of a lardy thing. Always annoyed him

By the time they are 9 years old, they will be likely be looking at DMF/DPF replacements, injector or high pressure fuel pump replacements etc.
They'll need that 1k ish saving and a fair bit more to fix those problems, thats if any of the latest stuff is still running at 9 years, which i doubt, they'll have spent considerably more servicing the things over time anyway.
Keep that simple handy little car of yours going as long as possible.
This, this and this!
I run a 1996 diesel at the moment for this reason - I hate how complicated and fragile diesel engines have become.
I run mine on chip fat (new and used), kerosene if I have some left over from the parts washer and of course diesel, when I'm feeling rich. These days if you look at an injector wrong it'll fail!
I still get 55mpg, still have lots of torque and ample power, but without the silly bills. Hate this new stuff.0 -
The VED system of taxing more for higher CO2 output is definitely NOT a con! It has worked perfectly - everyone now considers MPG, and CO2 output (or rather how much it'll cost to tax every year) before they buy a car. This was the point when the gov introduced it.0

My diesel car is almost 13 years old and has done nearly 200,000 miles.
None of the events you've predicted have ever happened, though this car was made before the advent of particulate filters (but does have an (original) exhaust catalyst).
All of the servicing bills, including oil and filters and brakes and exhaust and suspension parts such as bushes and Citroen spheres, add up to under £2000, so under a penny a mile.0 -

Yes and the beauty of it is, the manufacturers have made everything so damned complicated to comply with this CO2 obsession that the latest complicated cars won't see 10 years and will cost a fortune in maintenance to make it that far, so new car tax, vat etc plus various taxes on the makers/importers at sale time...Kerblinkingching.
Like Mattyprice above, i'll stick with proven older stuff ta very much.
If you visited Tilbury, Sheerness, Southampton and other docks over recent years you would have seen thousands upon thousands of reliable simple used cars lined up ready for export, good stuff like real Primera, old Volvos, Corolla/Avensis/Landcruisers etc, Africa being a major destination, those fellows know a good car when they see one, you won't find them signing up to DPF and other rubbish, they've got more sense.0 -

Yes and you've proved the point, your car was built before it all got out of hand.
Presumably a Xantia?, one of the best cars Citroen ever made, especially the last couple of years production.0 -
If you want something with cheap tax, But dont want a little box that crumples around you why ot buy a 1972 range rover V8. In their wisdom it seems its better for the enviroment with a V8 petrol engine guzzling 8 - 12mpg.
Well its tax free and insurance is cheap. WIN/WIN?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Funny how they were saying the same things 20,30 and 40 years ago as cars were improved, yet the fears never came to fruition. It will be the same in the future with the current breed of cars. But you carry on listening to Private Frasers favourite expression ringing in your ears.:)"You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"
