Deposit at dealer
Hi,
I went to the Vaxhaull garage last week. Seen a new vaxhaull corsa and put a deposit down for it £200. I haven't signed any forms or contracts.
I have decided I would not like to go through with the getting a corsa, due to hearing about loads of problems with the car.
Where do I stand, will I be able to get the deposit back or do I lose it?
Thanks, James.

Of course you can't get the deposit back. You've no valid reason for backing out!0

When you say new do you actually mean new or just new shape but pre-owned ?
If its pre owned then you have very little chance of getting it back as they will say quite rightly that it was taken off sale when you placed the deposit and they could have lost a sale to someone else.
If its brand new you may have a better chance but they dont have to return it.
Are you looking at another VX car in which case they may transfer it ?Totally Debt Free & Mortgage Free Semi retired and happy0 -
You lose the deposit0

I could be wrong, but isn't it normal to do your research before you put down a deposit on something?0

normally yes but on this forum customers think car dealers are safety deposit boxes and free money holders
they forget that they have things like expenses and other lifes little nasties
i always think that a deposit is a 2 way street you give me the wonga i promise not to sell vehicle to anyone else
you come back and say i have changed my mind
i keep wonga
this is why i only accept £100 deposits though
by the way my invoice clearly states non returnable and i might also seek legal address for broken contract
my customer is told this verbally too
its too easy these days for people to spend their money on their plastic cards and then repent at leisure0 -

Agreed. Never could work out what part of the word deposit some don't understand.
Or try this...you give me wonga I promise not to sell to anyone else. I change mind and sell to someone who will pay me straight away. You offer wonga back to original customer...things hit the proverbial fan. New thread starts "Car Dealer shafted me...what can I do?"0 -
For the car I recently purchased, the dealer offered to take a fully-refundable deposit while I discussed it with OH for a couple of days. I was a bit surprised, since it seemed I had nothing to lose but he had to stop offering it to anyone else. I guess he was pretty confident that I'd go ahead (which I did).0

non refundable you chose to set a deposit, you chose not go ahead he's entitled to keep the deposit.0

Absolutely. OP you now have the answer you require.0 -
Not only is the dealer allowed to keep the deposit, he could claim any money he is out of pocket from you as well. Such things as re-advertising the car, etc."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again".
