Any extension of a dwelling - be it a brick built extension, a timber lean-to or a conservatory, all fall under the same planning guidance - they are all extensions for planning purposes (not to be confused with Building Regs, which is entirely separate). The permitted development legislation allows extensions of certain sizes to be built without requiring a planning application to be submitted - for example on a detached house, a rear extension can be built without requiring express planning permission up to 4m deep from the original rear wall (that applies to brick extensions and conservatories and there are also other criteria).0
