Maintaining NI Conts when JSA ends

My contributions-based JSA is due to come to an end in the next few weeks.
I have been told that, if I continue to sign on every 2 weeks, I won't get any JSA but it will keep up my (Class 1?) National Insurance contributions.
I know its difficult to answer my question accurately as I don't know how much longer I will be out of work but I'm trying to weigh up the (potential) benefit of keeping up my Nat Insce conts with the time and cost of getting to the job centre. In the scheme of things, will maintaining Nat Ins conts (for 6 mths or so) particularly impact on me when I have been working for 27 years already?
Could I choose not to sign onand change me mind later?

Many thanks for any help/clarity anyone is able to give.

  • You only need 30 qualifying years to get a full state pension. You can get a pension forecast via directgov. If you sign off you can sign on again at a later date. It is also possible to make voluntary conts.
  • You need 30 years of NI contributions for the Sate Pension.
I have 30 plus years and at age 59 don't bother to sign on anymore. Your choice what to do really. I think you could sign on later for just the NI credits if you wanted to.
