United Airlines Mileage Plus - Add on air miles after booking flight?

I've booked several flights with UA and it wasn't until after I had booked them that I realised they offer an Airmiles reward scheme.
I've signed up but is it too late to add the airmiles on after I've already booked the flights?

You should be able to add your membership number to the booking if you have booked direct or just hand over your card when you check in. The miles aren't added to your account until you have actually flown.0

I booked through Expedia, does this affect it it at all? Guess I could just use my card when I fly. Cheers,2012 - Quidco - £144.860
