Claim - No Accident

Hi
Had an email and a text message today asking us to call our insurance company about a claim being made against us.
We have NOT had any accidents at all.
Rang company to be told, a third party has got in touch with them (they gave our registration number) and are saying that we had a head on collision with them in July.
I told them we have not had a crash with anyone, I asked where about in the country this was supposed to have happened and they couldn't say, said the didn't have that information.
They said that this does sometimes happen and it can be a wrong registration number etc, but we have a private reg.
Worried and annoyed about this, as like I say we have not had any collision at all.
Has anyone else ever had anything like this happen to them.
